Catholic Entity in Nigerian Diocese Donates to Survivors of Christmas Weekend Attacks

The Justice Development and peace Commission (JDPC) of Nigeria's Yola Diocese has reached out to hundreds of survivors of the 23-26 December 2023 attacks that left nearly 200 Christians dead in Plateau State.

Speaking during the handing over of food items and other relief materials to the survivors,  JDPC Coordinator, Fr. Maurice Kwairanga said the gesture was aimed at giving hope to the survivors.

“This gesture is nowhere compared to the losses incurred by these victims, but this is to cushion them from the hardships they are currently passing through,” Fr.  Kwairanga said during the Wednesday, September 10 event.

He added, “It is not easy to lose everything and be away from the comfort of your home for days, particularly in an unplanned circumstance.” 

“We are here to sympathize with these victims and support them in our little way,” the Nigerian Catholic Priest said.

Some of the items donated included bags of beans, rice, garri, maize, and other valuables.

Also speaking during the event, the JDPC Coordinator of Pankshin Diocese, Fr. Basil Kassam said 150 displaced households are expected to benefit from the donation.

He explained that the distribution of the items was devoid of religious, tribal and denominational affiliations

Kassam, who decried the killings and destruction of farmlands and other properties in communities, called on the government to be proactive in tackling the insecurity.

He advised the victims to continually trust God, adding that the end to the current security challenges is near.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Maren Danjuma, thanked the donors for their generosity, saying the support would go a long way in alleviating their challenges.

He appealed to the government and the security agencies to intensify efforts to return victims to their homes.
