The late Bishop Emeritus Georgio Biguzzi of Makeni Diocese in Sierra Leone who died on Monday, July 1 at the age of 88 in Italy has been eulogized as a “testament to faith” for serving diligently through Sierra Leone’s years of conflict.
In a note shared with ACI Africa on Monday, July 1, the Executive Director of Caritas Freetown also acknowledged Bishop Biguzzi’s “compassion and dedication to the service of God and humanity.”
“His tireless work and unwavering commitment have left an indelible mark on the hearts of those he served,” Fr. Peter Konteh said of the Italian Prelate, and added, “In this time of grief, we stand in deep solidarity with his family, the clergy, and all the faithful of the Diocese of Makeni.”
The Caritas official who also serves as the Vice President of the Regional Priest Association of West Africa said, “We mourn together with the wider Catholic Church, both in Sierra Leone and Italy, remembering a shepherd who guided his flock with wisdom and love.”
Fr. Konteh said that the late Bishop’s legacy not only instills hope but also promotes resilience. These qualities, he said were nurtured within the communities that the Italian-born Bishop touched.
“His efforts in fostering peace, unity, and spiritual growth will continue to inspire and guide us,” he said, adding, “In this moment of sorrow, let us also celebrate the profound impact of Bishop Biguzzi’s life and ministry.”
The president of Priests in Sierra Leone said, “We offer our heartfelt prayers for the repose of his soul, trusting in the promise of eternal life. May the God of all consolation grant comfort and strength to his loved ones and to all who are grieving this great loss.”
Born on 4 February 1936 in the Diocese of Cesena, Italy, Bishop Biguzzi was ordained a Priest of Xaverian Missionary Fathers in October 1960 after completing his Priestly formation.
He was ordained Bishop of Makeni Diocese in January 1987 following his appointment in November 1986. The Bishop served the Diocese until his retirement in January 2012 after which he relocated to his native country.
