Members of the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB) have urged the people of God in the Southeastern African nation to cultivate a culture of reading the Bible to deepen their relationship with God.
In an August 25 letter to Parish Priests and Diocesan Bible and Pastoral Coordinators, the Catholic Church leaders weigh in on the upcoming September 2025 Bible Month, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen awareness of the importance of the Word of God “in our lives as individuals, families, and communities.”
“We are therefore invited to cultivate the habit of reading and meditating on the Bible, so that we may grow in appreciation, love, and witness to God and His Word,” the Bishops say in the Monday, August 25 letter that Fr. Joseph Molika Sikwese, the MCCB Deputy Secretary, signed.
They also urge Parish Priests and Pastoral ministers to use the 2025 Bible Month as an opportunity to sensitize the faithful on the importance of having Bibles in their homes, stressing that the annual event is “a celebration of God’s Word as the very foundation of Christian life.”
“Parish priests and all pastoral ministers are encouraged to help the faithful appreciate the importance of the Bible in their homes and to promote Bible programmes that the National Bible Apostolate will broadcast on Radio Maria, Radio Kuwala, Radio Alinafe, Radio Tuntufye, and Luntha TV,” they say.
In their August 25 letter, the Catholic Church leaders note that the theme of the 2025 Bible Month, ‘Pilgrims of Hope: Seeking Servant Leadership,’ is inspired by the ongoing Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year and speaks to the nation’s context, particularly the upcoming general elections scheduled for September 16.
The theme, they say, “seeks to unite our spiritual journey of faith with our civic duty to promote leadership grounded in service, integrity, and the common good.”
The launch of the September Bible Month is scheduled for August 31 at the Bembeke Cathedral of the Catholic Diocese of Dedza, as well as at the local level in all Archdioceses and Dioceses of the country.
Meanwhile, the Catholic Bishops have announced that there will be a special collection in all parishes on the day of the launch to support the activities of the Bible Apostolate at both national and diocesan levels.
Proposed activities for the Bible Month include Bible processions and the enthronement of the Scriptures, encouraging families to engage in daily Bible reading, the use of booklets prepared by the National Bible Apostolate, and following Catholic media programs dedicated to the Bible.
