Young environmentalists in Kenya have concluded their two-day convention in Nairobi with a commitment to “reduce carbon footprint” and foster integral ecology in networking initiatives.

In a statement following their September 19-20 annual youth Forum on Peace and Integral Ecology held at the main campus of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) in Nairobi, Kenya, the youths also pledged to advocate for renewable energy.

“We, the undersigned, including representatives from high schools, universities, NGOs, faith-based organizations, and communities, affirm our collective commitment to fostering peace, ecological care, and sustainable development in Kenya and beyond,” they say.

They add, “In alignment with the spirit of this gathering, and inspired by the actions of our faith, tradition, and values, we pledge to reduce our Carbon footprint.”

“We will take measurable steps to reduce the carbon footprint of our institutions, organizations, and communities,” they say, and explain, “This includes using energy-efficient technologies, minimizing waste, and adopting sustainable practices in our daily operations.”

The young environmentalists also pledge to foster collaboration with partners, saying, “We will work in collaboration with governmental bodies, private sector partners, NGOs, and local communities to create impactful, innovative solutions for a sustainable future.”

The youths say that combining their resources, knowledge, and passion, they aim to lead the way in the transition to renewable energy.

“We commit to advocating for the adoption and promotion of renewable energy solutions in our communities, institutions, and beyond. We will actively support and implement sustainable energy practices, striving for a greener and cleaner future,” they say.

The two-day event that the Laudato Si’ Movement (LSM), the Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation Franciscans Africa, CUEA, and partners organized, focused on the theme, “Peace with Creation,” borrowed from the Season of Creation.

In the statement signed by 39 organizations and institutions dealing with environmental conservation, including Hare Krishna Temple, Baha'i faith, and Tangaza University College, the youths also pledged to raise awareness on environmental justice.

“We will work to raise awareness of the environmental challenges affecting vulnerable communities, particularly the youth, women, and marginalized groups,” they say following the two-day event that brought together over 700 environmental activists.

They add, “We recognize that climate justice is central to peace and equality, and we will advocate for policies that reflect these principles.”

The youths also affirm their commitment to the Paris Agreement 2015 treaty, aiming to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

They pledge to uphold United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 7 on affordable and Clean Energy, Goal 13 on Climate Action, and Goal 15 on Life on Land. They say, “We will align our activities and projects to contribute towards achieving these goals.”

The youths further pledge to not only educate but also inspire their colleagues. They say, “We will empower our youth with the knowledge and tools they need to become climate champions.”

They say that through educational initiatives, community outreach, and partnerships, they will ensure that the next generation is equipped to lead the way in renewable energy and environmental conservation.

The young environmentalists also pledge to promote interfaith dialogue and cooperation on climate action.

“We pledge to engage in meaningful interfaith dialogue, sharing knowledge and working together to strengthen our collective efforts in addressing climate change. We recognize that all faiths have a role in guiding the world toward environmental justice and peace,” they say.

They add, “We affirm our commitment to this pledge and will strive to take meaningful, impactful actions in our respective spheres of influence to promote renewable energy and environmental sustainability.”
