Members of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) have entered into a partnership with Huawei Technologies to boost the Church’s nationwide solar energy initiative, aimed at providing clean power to more than 4,000 Catholic institutions across the country.
Signed on October 14 in Accra, the agreement reportedly builds upon a previous partnership formed in July 2025 with Letshego Ghana Savings and Loans, which committed GHS 200 million (USD 16 million) in financing to support the Bishops’ Green Energy Initiative.
In a Tuesday, October 14 report, Bishop Gabriel Edoe Kumordji described the new agreement as a “milestone in our collective commitment to sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and responsible leadership.”
“Through this partnership, we are embarking on a transformative solar initiative that will power over 4,000 Catholic institutions across Ghana. These include schools, hospitals, parishes, seminaries, and social centres that serve our communities every single day,” Bishop Kumordji said.
The Local Ordinary of Ghana’s Keta Akatsi Diocese said that the partnership is the Bishops’ bold step forward to affirming their shared mission to promote renewable energy, address the pressing challenges of climate change, and safeguard the planet for future generations.
The project, first launched with Letshego’s financial backing, has been described as one of Ghana’s most ambitious faith-based renewable energy ventures.
By partnering with Huawei, the Catholic Bishops in West Africa are expected to gain access to advanced solar technologies, including inverters, energy storage systems, and smart monitoring solutions.
While Letshego provides the financial foundation for the project, Huawei is expected to supply solar products, servicing, and monitoring systems to ensure long-term sustainability.
“Huawei Technologies stands among the world’s foremost providers of digital power solutions. With cutting-edge technologies in solar inverters, energy storage, smart monitoring, and grid integration, combined with global experience and a strong local presence, Huawei brings excellence, reliability, and innovation to this partnership,” Bishop Kumordji said.
The member of the Society of Divine Word (SVD) noted that the initiative is also expected to create employment opportunities for the youth of the West African country.
“Furthermore, this project will create sustainable jobs and build local capacity, especially for our young people, who will be trained to install, manage, and maintain these systems. It is a long-term investment in both people and the planet,” he said.
Bishop Kumordji added, “We extend our sincere gratitude to Huawei Technologies for your partnership and confidence in this vision. We also thank our consultants, financiers, and dedicated stakeholders who have walked with us on this journey.”
