Catholic Archbishop in Mozambique Urges Christians to Strengthen Society through Everyday Acts of Sharing

Archbishop Claudio Dalla Zuanna of the Catholic Archdiocese of Beira in Mozambique has called on Catholics to embrace sharing as a way to strengthen human relationships, promote inclusion, and build more supportive communities.

In his homily on the Feast of Epiphany on Sunday, January 4, Archbishop Zuanna said that sharing with others is a concrete path toward a more just and humane society.

“Sharing begins with small, everyday attitudes,” the Mozambican Catholic Archbishop said at St. Francis Xavier Parish of Beira Archdiocese, noting that offering time, attention, listening, and simple acts of help are meaningful ways of caring for others. 

True sharing, he explained, “goes beyond material gifts and includes being present for others and offering the best one has, such as skills, intelligence, and compassion.”

The Argentine member of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart (SCI) emphasized that sharing does not mean giving only what is left over, but recognizing the dignity and value of every person. 

He said that when people learn to share, they build bonds of trust, respect, and fraternity that help overcome division and exclusion.

Referring to the Magi who offered gifts to the Christ Child, the Catholic Church leader noted that “everyone, regardless of age or social status, can contribute to a more just and caring society.”

He reflected on the social challenges many families face, warning that a lack of sharing leads to isolation and suffering. 

Archbishop Zuanna encouraged individuals to “take responsibility for the common good,” adding that good intentions “must be matched by consistent and committed action.”

“Concrete gestures of kindness can transform entire communities,” the Archbishop of Beira said.

He recalled that his Congregation has long promoted values of service, solidarity, and closeness to others, noting that these values “remain essential today as missionaries continue to encourage children and young people to engage in practical acts of care, friendship, and support.”

The Archbishop also underscored the importance of personal example, saying that faith finds its true meaning when expressed through concrete actions. 

He urged families, schools, and communities to “foster positive attitudes that promote respect and trust,” adding that children and young people in particular can be agents of change through simple daily gestures.

Calling on the people of God to be “a light for others,” Archbishop Zuanna said that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a lasting impact. 

He encouraged Catholics to “live simply and consistently, spreading hope through daily acts of goodness.”
