At the Eucharistic celebration to mark 24 years since he was Ordained Bishop, the Local Ordinary of Angola’s Lubango Archdiocese has urged the people of God to be “visible signs of unity” in the Church.

In his homily during the Monday, January 8 Eucharistic celebration, Archbishop Gabriel Mbilingi also asked for prayers for the success of his ministry in the Angolan Metropolitan See.

“We must continue to love, we must continue to be the visible sign of the unity of this church,” Archbishop Mbilingi said during the Eucharistic celebration at St. Joseph Cathedral of Lubango Archdiocese.

The Angolan member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit under the protection of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CSSp/Spiritans) who was Consecrated Bishop on 6 January 2000 by Pope St. John Paul II in Rome said, “I really only have to thank the Lord and ask him to be faithful to me just as I have become through ordination.”

The Archbishop of Lubango continued, “I have heard that voice of the Lord saying: ‘'you are my son, you are my beloved, you are my anointed.’”

“I must only ask him for the grace to be faithful to him just as Jesus Christ, the beloved son, the anointed and consecrated of the Father, was faithful to that love,” the 65-year-old Angolan Archbishop who previously served as President of the Symposium of Episcopal Conference of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) said.

Archbishop Mbilingi was ordained a Priest in February 1984.

In October 1999, he was appointed Coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Lwena. Following the resignation of Bishop José Próspero da Ascensão Puaty, he took over as Local Ordinary of Lwena Diocese.

He was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Lubango in December 2006 and succeeded Archbishop Zacarias Kamwenho in September 2009.

Archbishop Mbilingi also served as President of the Inter-Regional Meeting of the Bishops of Southern Africa (IMBISA).
