Catholic Bishops in Gabon have appealed for the fostering of values that are “dear to” the West African nation during their meeting with the country’s Transitional President, General Brice Oligui Nguema.

A press release from Gabon’s Presidency says that the Monday, January 16 meeting was an opportunity for members of the Episcopal Conference of Gabon (CEG) to “convey to the Head of State their encouragement for the success of his mission.”

“The Bishops appealed for peace, harmony, fraternity and collaboration; principles that are dear to our country,” the statement reads in part.

The press release further indicates that during the meeting, CEG members “took advantage of this time of exchange to express to the President of the Transition the assessments and recommendations of the ecclesiastical community with regard to the recent social measures, such as the return of the school allowance to all secondary schools in our country.”

Relations between Catholic Bishops and the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) in Gabon have reportedly been cordial since the military coup that ousted President Ali Bongo from power on 30 August 2023.
