The fostering of “good relations” between the Vatican and the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Principe was one of the highlights of the Thursday, February 1 meeting of the heads of the two States.

A Holy See Press Office statement indicates that Pope Francis “received in audience in the Vatican Apostolic Palace the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Principe” and that the two had “cordial discussions”.

Pope Francis and Prime Minister Patrice Émery Trovoada also discussed “some aspects of the political and socio-economic situation” of São Tomé and Principe, and its collaboration with the Vatican “in the fields of education and healthcare,” the communique indicates.

Later, Prime Minister Trovoada held a meeting with the Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Cardinal Parolin alongside Mons. Mirosław Wachowski, who serves as under-Secretary for Relations with States.

During the meetings, there was also “an exchange of opinions on international current affairs, with particular reference to security problems in the countries of the African Continent,” the February 1 Holy See Press Office statement indicates.

Prime Minister Trovoada’s encounter with the Holy Father and other Vatican officials comes two days after the ratification of the agreement that the Vatican and São Tomé and Príncipe signed on 15 August 2022.

The agreement on the recognition of the Catholic Church and her ecclesiastical institutions as a “juridical personality” in the African Island country was ratified on Tuesday, January 30 “with the exchange of the Instruments of Ratification”, the Holy See Press Office reported.
