Bishop Martín Lasarte Topolansky of Angola’s Lwena Diocese has called upon the new Deacon he ordained on February 3 to remain faithful to his vow of celibacy.

One of the three evangelical counsels, celibacy for members of the Clergy requires that they remain unmarried and sexually abstinent in their following of Jesus Christ, who chaste and poor achieved sanctification for humanity. Other Evangelical Counsels are poverty and obedience, the latter lived by Jesus Christ, especially when he accepted the death of the cross.

In his homily during the Diaconate ordination of Seminarian Rosário Kahalo Linha, Bishop Lasarte urged him to live the “gospel of service”.

“Strictly observe celibacy,” he told the Deacon-elect, and described the Evangelical Counsel as one that will make him “totally available without limit to the service of God's people, following the example of Jesus Christ and the apostles.”

Presiding over his first ordination since his Episcopal Consecration on 3 September 2023, the Uruguayan-born member of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) called upon the Deacon-elect to live a life of prayer and exercise prudence.

“In a globalized world, only prudence, prayer and pastoral ardor can keep the Deacon away from the temptations of the flesh,” he said during the Diaconate Ordination event that was held at Our Lady of Victory Parish of Lwena Diocese.

Bishop Lasarte went on to highlight the functions of a Deacon, including assisting the Local Ordinary, blessing marriages, presiding at funerals, proclaiming the Gospel, and administering baptism, among other responsibilities.

He underscored the need for the new Deacon to remain faithful to the Gospel value of servant leadership, saying, “In a world where everyone seeks power, where flattery, intrigue, envy, corruption and dishonesty are present, the Deacon should be the living gospel of service.”

“In addition to meditation and the proclamation of the word, you must prioritize teamwork,” the SDB Bishop, whose Episcopal appointment was made public last July 1 said, and called upon the Deacon-elect strive for serving “rigorously” and always aim for “total availability”.

A servant, Bishop Lasarte went on to say, “is docile, available, does what is needed and what is asked of him, seeks the last place and is attentive to the least.”
