Members of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) have launched Vocations Sunday in anticipation of this year’s Sunday, April 21 event, with a call to conversion and the fostering of “new evangelization”.

In his homily during the March 10 event that Malawi’s Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) organized at St. Martin de Porres Ngerenge Parish of Karonga Diocese, the Vocations Director of the Malawian Episcopal See said that as the Church marks the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, Christians in Malawi need to embrace new evangelization and assess their lifestyle in view of conversion.

In a Monday, March 11 report about the launch, Fr. Bernard Silungwe is said to have “wondered as to why after years of Christian existence in the country, Christians are still embracing syncretism and double-standard-ness of life.”

The Vocations Director of Karonga Diocese, who represented the Local Ordinary, Bishop Martin Anwel Mtumbuka alluded to superficiality among the baptized, saying, “Maybe we have only accepted faith so that we may be honoured Christian Burial when all is said and done.”

The Malawian Catholic Priest called upon the youth in Malawi to take their formal education pursuits seriously and include God in their daily endeavours. He said, “Education is key to your future, and remember Grace builds on nature.”

Marked on the Fourth Sunday of Easter, Vocations Sunday, traditionally known as Good Shepherd Sunday with the Gospel reading presenting Jesus as the Good Shepherd who cares for us, is dedicated to helping young people discover the deepest inclinations of their hearts and promoting vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life.

This year’s April 21 event will be 61st anniversary of the annual celebration, which Pope Paul VI established in 1964 with the purpose of fulfilling the instruction of Jesus Christ in Matthew 9:38, to pray for the Lord of the harvest to send labourers into his harvest.

In the report about the launch of this year’s Vocations Sunday in Malawi on March 10, the PMS National Director in Malawi, Fr. Peter Madeya, is quoted as expressing gratitude to the Diocese of Karonga for hosting the national event, and the youth for taking the lead in preparing for the launch.

Fr. Madeya also expressed the hope that the April 21 celebration “will even be more colourful”, the March 11 report indicates.

The PMS National Director in Malawi, who doubles as the National Laity Council Coordinator in the Southern African nation challenged the youth of Karonga Diocese and the entire country to reach out to their colleagues to “know and serve Christ”.

He called upon the PMS members in Malawi to embrace the three core values of the global entity, prayer, service, and financial contribution to the PMS fund to help the Church’s mission.
