Archbishop Giovanni Gaspari, who is leaving Angola and São Tomé & Príncipe after close to four years of diplomatic service, has described his service in both nations as a “great gift”, and a source of his spiritual enrichment.

“Representing Pope Francis in Angola and São Tomé was a great gift, and serving the people of God in these two countries was a source of spiritual and human enrichment for me,” the Apostolic Nuncio said in his address to members of the Bishops' Conference of Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe (CEAST) at a farewell Mass that was held at the Our Lady of Remedies Cathedral of Luanda Archdiocese on Wednesday, April 17.

He added, “Since 2020, the year in which I was appointed by Pope Francis to serve these lands, I have witnessed countless events that have boosted the Church's apostolic zeal.”

The member of the Clergy of Italy’s Archdiocese of Pescara-Penne who moves on to serve as the representative in Korea and Mongolia following his March 2 appointment said the visits he made to the various pastoral communities left unforgettable moments.

“I won't forget the smiles of the children, the stories of the poor, the humiliated, those who feel abandoned. I won't forget those who have placed their trust and security only in God's love,” Archbishop Gaspari said.

He expressed his desire to see a faithful Angolan elevated to the rank of saint and called on the Church to consecrate itself to the cause of proclaiming the Gospel without questioning the Lord's designs.

Archbishop Gaspari thanked the Angolan state and the Church for years he spent in Angola and São Tomé.

The 60-year-old Apostolic Nuncio was ordained a Priest of the Archdiocese of Pescara-Penne in Central Italy in July 1987 and joined the Holy See diplomatic service in July 2001.

Before his appointment to Angola and and São Tomé & Príncipe, his inaugural service as Apostolic Nuncio when he was assigned the Titular See of Alba Marittima in Croatia, Archbishop Gaspari had served in Apostolic Nunciatures of Iran, Albania, Mexico, and Lithuania.

As part of his journey in the Vatican diplomatic service, the Catholic Church leader, who, besides his native Italian language, also speaks English, Spanish, and French also served in the Section for Relations with States of the Vatican Secretariat of State.
