UK-based Catholic Entity Warns Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan “quickly getting worse”, Appeals for Partnership

The humanitarian crisis in Sudan needs urgent attention, the leadership of the development and humanitarian arm of the Catholic Bishops of England and Wales, the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD), has said. 

In a statement that was published on Wednesday, April 24, officials of the Catholic entity say the yearlong war that broke out in April 2023 has created “one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises (and) the situation is quickly  getting worse, and people caught up in the middle of the conflict are now facing yet another crisis – hunger.”

“The war in Sudan has forced millions of people to flee their homes. People are running out of food, water and medicine and many families continue to risk their lives fleeing their homes to escape the fighting. Please donate today to help meet these urgent, basic needs,” they say.

CAFOD leadership appeals for support, saying, “Your donation today can help to make a real difference by providing basic essentials like emergency food, water and shelter. Your donation today can provide emergency food, shelter and water to families who need it in Sudan and its surrounding countries.”

CAFOD officials further say that since fighting erupted between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the paramilitary force under General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, and army units of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), their entity has been providing financial aid to local partners “to urgently scale up their emergency response.”

“Our partners have been providing emergency food packages to those people who have been forced to leave their homes, refugees, and to communities hosting them. They are also preparing for the distribution of cash vouchers to vulnerable families, so they can buy essentials like food, water and hygiene products themselves,” they say.

Local partners are also supporting refugees who had sought refuge in Sudan before the war broke out, officials of the UK-based Catholic entity say, adding that donations being sought will facilitate support for internally displaced Sudanese and those who are seeking refuge in neighbouring countries. 

The conflict, which started in Sudan’s capital city, Khartoum, and became a full-fledged civil war in the entire Northeastern African nation has reportedly killed at least 14,700 people and injured almost 30,000 more. The number of people displaced by conflict since the war broke out inside and outside of Sudan has reportedly reached 8.2 million.

Due to extensive fighting, at least one-third of the population is displaced, and nearly half the population – 25 million people – need humanitarian assistance. In Darfur, mass killings and displacement have led to reports of ethnic violence, according to an April 12 Reliefweb report.
