Members of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) are calling for “swift action” and “generous acts of charity” to prevent further loss of lives and property amid flash floods occasioned by continuous heavy rainfall in the East African nation.

In a Tuesday, May 7 statement, KCCB members say the response to their appeal for support across all Catholic Dioceses in Kenya “has been good so far”, and thank Pope Francis for expressing his “spiritual closeness” with the people of God in the country.

“In the past few weeks, Kenya has experienced severe flooding that has tragically resulted in loss of lives, widespread displacement and considerable destruction of property,” Catholic Bishops in Kenya say, referring to the reported loss of at least 229 human lives,  some 75 people unaccounted for, and displacement of 46,937 households, who include over 234,685 people among other disruptions.

Many families and individuals, they say, “are struggling to cope with the immediate aftermath of this disaster.” The Catholic Church leaders says they find it regrettable that “the rains continue to fall, exacerbating the already dire situation.”

“It is against this backdrop that we, KCCB members, wish to express our profound sympathy and solidarity with all those affected by these devastating floods,” they say in the two-page statement that their Chairman, Archbishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kisumu signed.

The Catholic Church leaders say they “share the grief” of family members of those, who have passed on “during this disaster”, and add, “In this time of sorrow, we stand united in prayer and support.”

Alluding to particular incidences such as the boat that capsized killing many in Kenya’s Garissa County and individuals and families swept away by raging waters in Mai Mahiu, KCCB members express their spiritual solidarity, and “every Kenyan to exercise the utmost caution.”

“Adults must take the lead in ensuring the safety of our children, particularly in areas prone to flooding. People should not take unnecessary risks. We implore communities to be vigilant and proactive in safeguarding every member, especially the most vulnerable,” they say.

The Catholic Church leaders call upon the County and National governments to mobilize their disaster management resources with “greater urgency” to prevent further deaths and destruction.

“Now is the time to utilize resources allocated for such crises effectively. We call for swift action to save lives, protect property, and, in areas where the rains have subsided, begin the necessary work of rebuilding and rehabilitation,” they say.

As KCCB, the Catholic Bishops say, “We have already initiated an appeal across all our Dioceses for our Christian faithful and Kenyans of goodwill to move with haste and help those in distress.”

“The response has been good so far and we plead for more support to aid those in desperate need. Contributions can be made through local parishes, diocesan offices, or designated relief services,” they say, and add, “Let us show our love and compassion through generous acts of charity, reflecting the teachings of Christ in our actions.”

In the May 7 statement, KCCB members emphasize the need for a collaborative approach in handling the challenging situation, saying, “Together, we can overcome the challenges posed by these floods.”

“Through collective effort and divine grace, we shall restore hope and rebuild our communities,” they reiterate, and implore, “Let us pray for all those affected and work tirelessly to alleviate their suffering.”

“May we show a God's Mercy through our actions this time of distress to our brothers and sisters. May God console the families of those who have lost their loved ones and comfort those currently in distress,” KCCB members further implore.

The Catholic Church leaders recall the Holy Father’s message of solidarity with the people of God in Kenya, saying, “We are most grateful to the Holy Father Pope Francis for his prayers and show of solidarity with our country.”

Speaking during his weekly General Audience on Wednesday, May 1, at the Vatican, Pope Francis said, “I wish to convey to the people of Kenya my spiritual closeness at this time when a severe flood has tragically taken the lives of many of our brothers and sisters, injuring others and causing widespread destruction.”

He appealed for prayers for those affected by the “natural disaster” and cautioned against despair amid “adversity”.

“I invite you to pray for all those who are suffering the effects of this natural disaster,” Pope Francis said, and added, “Even in the midst of adversity, let us remember the joy of the risen Christ.”
