Caritas Zambia has established Community Child Protection Committees (CCPCs) in the Southern African nation to curb the rise in cases of defilement and child abuse in the country.

In a Wednesday, April 16 statement published on Facebook, Caritas Zambia says that it is working together with other organizations in the country to enlighten community members on creating a protective environment for children in the country.

“Through the support of partners like the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, Save the Children Zambia, and collaboration with the Zambia Association of Sisterhoods, along with our implementing diocesan partners Caritas MONZE and Caritas Mongu, we are setting up Community Child Protection Committees that empower community members to take an active role in safeguarding our children,” Caritas Zambia says.

The development and humanitarian arm of the Catholic Church in Zambia praised the efforts of the CCPCs in the country, highlighting their dedication to raising awareness and supporting families while fostering an environment where children are heard and protected.

“These committees are not just our first line of defense; they are a beacon of hope for our children, helping to create safe environments where they can thrive and grow,” Caritas Zambia says.

According to UNICEF, child sexual violence, defilement, and rape continue to escalate in Zambia.

In the April 16 statement, Caritas Zambia emphasizes its commitment to strengthen community-based child protection structures that help in identifying and addressing risks to children and ensuring their safety from all forms of abuse.

The Catholic organization acknowledges the crucial role that empowered committee members play in fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility for child protection.

Caritas Zambia also notes that community-based structures are not only responsible for child protection but also possess a better understanding of local issues, cultures, and dynamics, “which allows for tailored responses that are more effective and culturally relevant.”

Caritas Zambia urges the people of God in Zambia to unite and ensure every child feels safe, valued, and respected.
