At Chrism Mass, Catholic Bishop in Angola Urges Priests to Commit to “enthusiastically proclaim newness of the Gospel”

Bishop Firmino David of the Catholic Diocese of Sumbe in Angola

The commitment of Priests to communicate the Good News of the Gospel with enthusiasm is essentially important, Bishop Firmino David of the Catholic Diocese of Sumbe in Angola has said.

In his Tuesday, April 15 homily during the anticipated Chrism Mass that is traditionally celebrated on Holy Thursday, Bishop Firmino urged Priests to use the ongoing Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year to nurture a close relationship with the person of Jesus Christ, including the Sacrament of Confession.

“In this Jubilee year, let us encourage the practice of the sacrament of penance and reconciliation. Let us also reconcile with ourselves, reflecting seriously on the nobility of our being and our vocation, particularly along the path of holiness,” he said.

“Let us make our steps paths of holiness,” the Angolan Catholic Bishop said during the anticipated Chrism Mass at Our Lady of the Conception Cathedral of Sumbe Diocese.

He emphasized the need for Priests to preach the World of God with zeal and enthusiasm, saying, “We are constituted by a special title—witnesses and ministers, enriched with the Jubilee experience. Let us press on, brothers in the Priesthood, in our commitment to enthusiastically proclaim the newness of the Gospel, which stirs in us the heart and face of Christ.”

“We must return to Christ to rediscover the source and deeper meaning of our fraternity,” the 63-year-old Catholic Bishop, who started his Episcopal Ministry in July 2023 following his appointment in May 2023 said, emphasizing the need for Priests to nurture a close relationship with the person of Jesus Christ.

He underscored the importance of prayer as the foundation for fruitful Priestly Ministry, saying, “The secret to the fruitfulness of our apostolate lies in one key: the interior life with God through prayer.”

Bishop Firmino also emphasized the need for Priests to be in conformity with Church teachings. “Christians expect to find in Priests, women and men Religious firm in the doctrine of the Church; we must be faithful to Christ, our life’s model,” he said.

He went on to urge Priests to foster unity and collaboration among peers. He said, “We are pieces of Christ calling for unity. We must unite with our Presbyterate, colleagues, and fellow Religious. This requires discipline.”

The Angolan Catholic Bishop expressed his awareness of the challenges that Priests face in a secularized world. He advised, “As heralds and ambassadors of Christ, we are urgently invited to live in intimacy with Him. Only authentic witnesses can credibly radiate the saving word.”
