Senegal’s President has eulogized the late Pope Francis as a champion of ecological responsibility alongside his “unwavering fidelity” to the Gospel message.
In his address during the opening ceremony of the Fifth Plenary Assembly of the Regional Episcopal Conference of West Africa (RECOWA), President Bassirou Diomaye Faye described the late Pontiff as a spiritual leader whose teachings continue to inspire action on climate change, social justice, and the dignity of the marginalized.
“Pope Francis has completed his earthly pilgrimage, marked by an unwavering fidelity to the values of the Gospel,” President Faye said in his Tuesday, May 6, address at the Grand Theater of Dakar.

The late Pontiff’s “magisterium was particularly distinguished by his constant and deep concern for the poor, the marginalized, and the forsaken—those whose inalienable dignity is often disregarded, as tragically illustrated by the suffering of migrants, refugees, and victims of war and famine,” he said about the late Pope Francis, who was laid to rest on April 26 following his passing on Easter Monday, April 21.
