Members of the South African Council of Churches (SACC) have described the involvement of a woman in her child’s kidnapping in South Africa as a terrible case of betrayal.

Racquel Chantel Smith was charged at a South African court with kidnapping and selling her young daughter. The woman was charged alongside her partner and another man over the disappearance of her daughter Joshlin Smith more than a year ago. Joshlin, who was six years old when she disappeared, is still missing following a nationwide police hunt.

In a statement published on May 3, SACC members said they had received the news of the conviction of Joshlin’s mother and the other accused adults with sadness and shock.

“It is sad and shocking that one of the convicted is the mother of the little girl, who has been found to have participated in the disappearance of the child,” the Christian leaders said, reiterating the court’s sentiments on the gravity of the offence.

“The court found that the actions of the accused were in stark violation of the moral and legal obligations inherent in the parent-child relationship,” the members of the Christian entity which includes representatives of the Catholic Church in South Africa, said.

They explained that in biblical terms, the parent-child relationship is sacred and foundational, reflecting God’s own nature as a loving Father.

The parent-child relationship, the Christian leaders said, is a relationship of divine trust, marked by nurture, discipline, sacrifice, and legacy.

They said that the example of Mary and Jesus, where Mary is “both maternal and prophetic”, demonstrates how a parent is called to nurture and guide, and allow children to fulfil their purpose.

“We see from the example of Hannah and Samuel, that a parent’s prayers for their child can contribute to their path in life. And we see from Jacob and Joseph that this favoured son, although betrayed - returned respect and honour to his family,” the SACC members said.

Praying for the safety of Joshlin, the Christian leaders appealed to security agencies in the country to do all they can to complete the search for the young girl.

“We pray that God may continue to give His angels charge over Joshlin, and that she will soon be brought to a place of safety,” they said, and added, “This case reflects the need for us to be vigilant and alert, collectively taking care of our children, because every child deserves the protection of their community.”
