Vice Rector of Cardinal Emile Biayenda Major Seminary Appointed Local Ordinary of Ouesso Diocese, Congo Brazzaville

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Mons. Brice Armand Ibombo, who has been serving as Vice-Rector of Émile Cardinal Biayenda National Major Seminary in the Republic of Congo (Congo Brazzaville) the Local Ordinary of the country’s Catholic Diocese of Ouesso.

The appointment of Mons. Ibombo for Ouesso Diocese that has been vacant since the January 2024 transfer of Archbishop Gélase Armel Kemai to the Catholic Archdiocese of Owando was made public by the Holy See Press Office on Wednesday, May 28.

In a remark issued shortly after his appointment, the Bishop-elect says, “I did not expect it, but I bless the Lord who has put his hand on me. It is an unworthy servant that I am.”

“I intend to truly get to know this Diocese in depth – its people, their faith, their daily realities, and especially their lived experience of faith,” Mons. Ibombo said.

Born in November 1973 in Abala in the Catholic Diocese of Gamboma, the Bishop-elect was ordained a Priest in August 2004 after completing Philosophical and Theological studies at the Mon. Georges-Firmin Singha Major Seminary in Congo Brazzaville and Concordia-Pordenone Major Seminary in Italy, respectively.

Ibombo served as Parish Vicar of the Cathedral of Santo Stefano Protomartyr of Concordia Sagittaria, Parish Administrator of Santa Maria degli Angeli of Caraffa del Bianco, Secretary of the Episcopal Conference of Congo, and Parish Cooperator at Notre-Dame des Victoires of Ouenzé.

The holder of a Doctorate in Church History from the Rome-based Pontifical Gregorian University also served as Professor at the Department of History at the Marien Ngouabi University of Brazzaville and member of the College of Consultors of the Diocese of Gamboma.

Once ordained a Bishop, Mons. Ibombo is expected to oversee Ouesso Diocese that measures 56,800 km² with an estimated population of 25,600 Catholics, representing 20.5 percent of the population, according to 2023 statistics.

The Congolese Diocese is in the Ecclesiastical Province of Owando. It was carved out from the then Episcopal See of Owando on 6 June 1983. The Diocese of Owando was elevated to an Archdiocese in May 2020, with two suffragan Dioceses, Impfondo and Ouesso.
