Dieudonné Cardinal Nzapalainga of the Catholic Archdiocese of Bangui in the Central African Republic (CAR) has appealed for solidarity and support in rebuilding the Shrine of Our Lady of Ngoukomba after a violent storm that teared off roofs, uprooted trees, and destroyed other structures.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, May 29 after he had visited the National Pilgrimage site, Cardinal Nzapalainga reflected on the extent of damage caused and what it will take to reconstruct the Shrine.

“This morning, I came to the Ngoukomba site—a place of prayer, a place where we come to listen to the Word of God. A place of fellowship where we come to gather around the Virgin Mary, to see for myself and witness the situation,” the Cardinal said.

He added, “Many times, we are told and warned about climate change, but many do not take it seriously. We have just experienced a unique event where the violent wind on Sunday, May 25 tore off the roof of the house for Priests, uprooted and scattered the trees that had been planted to provide shade.”

Cardinal Nzapalainga further said, “Part of the chapel roof was carried away by the wind. The dais used for the Eucharist during pilgrimages also partially collapsed. Even the roofs of the site’s toilets were destroyed.”

Having assessed the damage, the Cardinal presided over the Eucharistic celebration on the grounds, emphasizing the importance of beginning with prayer.

“I came here to celebrate the Eucharist—that is, to give thanks to God, first of all, for everything He continues to do for us through the Virgin Mary,” the member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost Fathers/Spiritans/CSSp.) said.

He appealed to Catholics and people of goodwill to help restore the Marian site.

“Men and women of goodwill who hear us, we have suffered damage at the Marian site of Ngoukomba. The Lord is also testing us, and it is up to us to rise together, hand in hand, in solidarity, to rebuild what has been destroyed, to raise up what has fallen, to restore beauty to this site,” Cardinal Nzapalainga said.

“Your donations will be most welcome,” he said, adding that further information on the cost of the repairs will be communicated.

“The chaplain will have the opportunity to inform everyone about the costs involved in rebuilding the chapel, the toilets, other structures, and then you will know how each person can contribute to restoring and rebuilding all that was destroyed by this violent wind,” Cardinal Nzapalainga said.

The Ngoukomba site is an important Marian pilgrimage destination in the Archdiocese of Bangui, attracting thousands of Catholics from across the CAR and beyond every year.
