On the occasion of Nigeria’s annual Democracy Day marked on June 12, Bishop Gerald Mamman Musa of the country’s Catholic Diocese of Katsina has urged the people of God in the West African nation to dedicate themselves to building “a just, equitable, and prosperous nation.”

In a Thursday, June 12 statement published on Facebook, Bishop Musa highlights Nigeria’s democratic journey and urges Nigerians to reflect on the challenges and opportunities in the country.

“Let us renew our commitment to building a just, equitable, and prosperous nation for all. May our leaders be guided by wisdom, integrity, and a deep love for the people,” Bishop Musa says.

The Local Ordinary of Katsina Diocese underscores the importance of national unity and collective responsibility in the West African Nation, saying, “As a nation, let us strive to promote unity, peace, and understanding.”

He calls on all Nigerians to collaborate and address the issues that lead to the division of the people to build a flourishing nation for both the current and the future generations.

Democracy Day in Nigeria, celebrated annually on June 12, commemorates the annulled 1993 presidential election, widely considered the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history, and the nation's eventual return to democratic governance.

The celebrations serve as a time for reflection on the progress of democracy and a renewed commitment to the values of justice, freedom, and good governance.

In the June 12 statement, Bishop Musa says, “May this special day be a reminder of the importance of democratic values and the responsibility that comes with it.”

The Catholic Church Leader of Katsina Diocese emphasized the need for national unity and the power for all to work towards the “common goal” of the nation, saying, “May we always remember that our strength lies in our diversity and our ability to work together towards a common goal.”

“May God bless Nigeria and guide us on our journey towards a more perfect democracy,” he implores.
