The Bishop-elect for the Catholic Diocese of Bafatá has called on the people of God in the Bissau-Guinean Episcopal See to walk with him in communion and co-responsibility, emphasizing that Episcopal Ministry cannot be lived in isolation.

Addressing the people of God in Bafatá Diocese during a welcome ceremony, Mons. Victor Luís Quematcha emphasized the communal nature of Church leadership.

“I cannot be a Bishop without you. I will need your help, your collaboration, your presence,” Mons. Quematcha during the June 13 event, and added, “A Bishop is truly a Bishop only with the people of God, walking alongside them.”

“Let us walk together, opening doors and pathways with God leading us. If we journey together, the path will open, and God will remove the obstacles,” the Bissau-Guinean member of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin (OFM Cap.) said.

He urged the people of God in Bafatá Diocese to embrace their shared pastoral mission, particularly in social outreach. “Let us work together with commitment, especially in areas like healthcare and Caritas,” he said.

Reflecting on his own spiritual journey, Mons. Quematcha testified to the protective presence of God and the Blessed Virgin Mary throughout his life.

“Despite challenges, the Virgin Mary will always intercede for us and God will always accompany us,” he said.

The late Pope Francis appointed Mons. Quematcha as the Bishop of Bafatá Diocese on March 8.

The Bissau-Guinean Episcopal See has been vacant since March 2021 following the passing on of Bishop Pedro Carlos Zilli

Born in April 1967 in Cúmura in the Catholic Diocese of Bissau, the Bishop-elect was ordained a Priest in May 1998 in Nhoma, Guinea Bissau.
