Bishop Emílio Sumbelelo of the Catholic Diocese of Viana in Angola has cautioned the people in the Southern African nation against indifference to the plight of others and emphasized the need for fraternal love and the fostering of justice.

In his Sunday, August 24 homily during the concluding Mass of his pastoral visit to St. Joseph’s Parish of his Episcopal See, Bishop Sumbelelo emphasized that living the Gospel also means commitment to others, especially in contexts marked by inequality and social division.

“Love of neighbour and justice are not mere theoretical virtues; they demand from us concrete commitment and effective solidarity,” the Angolan Catholic Bishop said.

He added, “One cannot speak of authentic Christian life when the heart is closed to the suffering of others or when indifference takes root within communities.”

“The Christian is called to be a living sign of fraternity, to care for the most vulnerable, and to practice justice in every dimension of social and ecclesial life. We cannot follow Jesus and at the same time remain indifferent to the wounds of the people,” Bishop Sumbelelo said.

He noted that justice is inseparable from charity and challenged Christians to take a stand against corruption, exclusion, and oppression in society.

“Justice begins in our families, in our communities, and in our hearts. If we want to be disciples of Christ, we must fight against the injustices that persist in our society,” he said.

The Catholic Church leader also appealed for humility, simplicity, and solidarity, urging the faithful to live a faith that transforms communities.

“Personal transformation is the condition for community transformation. Our greatness lies in our ability to love without expecting anything in return,” he said, adding that “a Church that remains silent in the face of injustice ceases to be prophetic and distances itself from its mission.”

During his visit, the 66-year-old Catholic Bishop held meetings with apostolic groups, conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation to 20 candidates.

In his message to parishioners, he emphasized the need to strengthen ecclesial unity through prayer, listening, and service.

The Angolan Catholic Bishop lauded the dedication of pastoral agents and lay leaders, calling their often-unrecognized service “precious in God’s eyes.”

Bishop Sumbelelo urged the people of God to root their lives in prayer and to become protagonists of evangelization.

“Only a praying Church is a strong Church. We need young people who courageously embrace their faith, families that live forgiveness and fidelity, and laypeople who assume the mission of announcing Christ in words and deeds,” he said.
