SIGNIS Nigeria’s Ongoing Congress to Equip Communicators to be Agents of Hope amid Despair: Official

SIGNIS Nigeria has organized a congress to strengthen professional bonds among Catholic communicators in the West African country that is grappling with socio-economic challenges.

In a statement obtained by ACI Africa, officials of SIGNIS Nigeria say that the September 3-5 congress being held at the Sisters of Divine Love Retreat Centre in Lugbe in the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja will also be an opportunity to restructure the association.

“This congress is crucial for strengthening professional bonds and equipping our members to be more effective promoters of hope within Nigeria's current socio-economic landscape,” reads the statement that Fr. Patrick Alumuku, the SIGNIS Nigeria President signed.

The Congress, according to the statement also signed by SIGNIS Nigeria Secretary Fr. Tony Kelechi Agbugba, “will also provide a platform for strategic deliberation and the election of new leadership to guide the association forward.”

Organized on the theme, “Communicating Hope and Change –Catholic Media's Role in Shaping Nigeria's Future,” the congress has brought together Catholic communicators from across the West African nation.

Officials say that the congress will serve as a pivotal forum for media professionals to enhance their skills, reflect on their mission, and strategize for the future of the Church's communications apostolate.

Inaugurated by the Local Ordinary of Abuja Archdiocese, Archbishop Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, the event will feature goodwill messages from the President of SIGNIS World, Mrs. Helen Osman, and the President of SIGNIS Africa, Fr. Walter Ihejirika, among other guests.

The program will feature a keynote address from Ambassador Joe Keshi. Attendees will also benefit from a session on the future of Catholic communications in Nigeria, facilitated by the Chairman of Communications at the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Bishop David Ajang.

The National Director of Communications, Fr. Michael Umoh, is also expected to address participants and provide more insight into the Church's teachings on communications.

SIGNIS Nigeria is the national body for Catholic communications professionals and a member of SIGNIS World.
