Members of the Mill Hill Missionaries (MHM), who pioneered and planted the seed of faith in the Catholic Archdiocese of Kisumu, have been commended for their unwavering perseverance and dedication in proclaiming the word of God despite immense hardships.

In his message read out by Fr. Hillary Awiti during the centenary celebrations on Friday, October 10, the MHM Superior General praised the remarkable milestones the Kenyan Metropolitan See has achieved since its establishment in 1925.

“As the Archdiocese of Kisumu joyfully celebrates 100 years of faith and mission, the Mill Hill Missionaries join in thanksgiving for a century of God's grace and guidance,” Fr. Michael Corcoran said.

From its foundation, Fr. Corcoran said that Kisumu Archdiocese has “been closely linked with the missionary endeavors of the Mill Hill Society, whose members were privileged to be the pioneers of the Catholic faith in this region.”

“When we look at the Archdiocese of Kisumu, we can rightly ask, who could foresee what we are celebrating today? Missionaries, young and inexperienced, ill-educated, with little knowledge of the local situation, and yet bringing about such a change as the one we are witnessing now in this Archdiocese,” he said.

Amid challenges, Fr. Corcoran said that faith, enthusiasm, and the message of God's love were the great tools at the disposal of the early MHM members in the region.

“The missionaries knew they faced mighty challenges ahead, among them the prospect of a long separation from their families and friends in Europe and America,” said the Irish-born MHM Superior General.

The pioneer missionaries “went forward, facing all manner of hardships to proclaim the Kingdom of God in the footsteps of the founder, Cardinal Herbert Vaughan, going to those in greatest need,” he said the English-born Catholic Church leader, who, until his passing on in June 1903 aged 71, served as Archbishop of Westminster.

Over the past century, he said, the sacrifices of those early pioneers, together with the generous service of their successors, have laid a firm foundation for the vibrant faith community that exists today.

Fr. Corcoran also conveyed HMH members’ heartfelt congratulations to Archbishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba of Kisumu, together with the Clergy, women and men Religious, and Laity of the Kenyan Metropolitan See for the centenary celebrations milestone.

As MHM members, Fr. Corcoran said, “we remain ever grateful for the hospitality and the trust of the Archbishops, past and present, who have invited us to share in the mission of shepherding God's people.”

“As we commemorate this milestone, we pray that the Archdiocese of Kisumu may continue to grow from strength to strength, becoming ever more a beacon of hope, joy, and faith for the wider Church and for generations yet to come,” he said.

Due to the dedication of the pioneer missionaries, the MHM Superior General said that the flame of faith grew and also continues to grow in other generations. “We look forward in faith and hope to the future, building a vibrant faith community, sharing that faith intact, active, and real,” he said.
