A Catholic Priest in Ivory Coast has encouraged members of the Laity to take an active role in transforming society through faith, justice, and service, fostering human dignity.

In his homily during Holy Mass to officially launch the pastoral year of the Laity in the Catholic Archdiocese of Abidjan, Fr. Justin Akouatcha underscored the essential mission of lay people within the Church and the world.

“Our baptismal vocation makes us Priests, prophets, and kings. The commitment the Church expects from us is to ensure that it presents a radiant face—one that stands for justice, peace, and above all, human dignity,” Fr. Akouatcha said during the October 12 Eucharistic celebration that was held at Holy Trinity Akouédo-Attié Parish of Abidjan Archdiocese.

The Secretary of Catholic Works in the Archdiocese of Abidjan reminded lay Catholics that their mission begins in their own families. He said, “The life of the laity does not exist only in the Church; it begins at home. To transform society, you must give your children a solid Christian upbringing.”

Reflecting on the theme of the new pastoral year in the Archdiocese of Abidjan, “Church, Family of God in Abidjan: Synodal, Autonomous, and at the Service of All,” and that of the National Council of the Laity of Ivory Coast, “Lay Faithful: Witnesses of Hope and Builders of a Fraternal Society,” Fr. Akouatcha urged the laity to live their faith actively for the renewal of the Church and society.

“Play your part, because you represent an important force within the Church. We often see Priests and Religious at the forefront, but in reality, the foundation of the Church rests on lay faithful who are committed and active,” the Catholic Priest said.

He encouraged the Laity to allow the Holy Spirit to guide their efforts. He said, “Let yourselves be open to the action of the Holy Spirit. Make your movements and associations true places of God’s presence by remaining united to build a strong and living Church.”

On her part, Marie Jeanne Alaba, President of the Diocesan Laity Council of Abidjan, echoed the Priest’s call, saying it is time to put lay people at the heart of Church life.

“We will work toward building an authentic, organized, and well-trained Laity that takes initiative,” Mrs. Alaba said, adding, “This will come through the formation of lay people—something the council will pursue urgently to help renew our society, which is losing its moral compass.”
