Pope Francis Appoints Apostolic Administrator for Ghana's Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese

Newly Appointed Apostolic Administrator for Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese Ghana, Fr. John Baptist Attakruh.

Pope Francis has appointed Fr. John Baptist Attakruh as the new Apostolic Administrator of Ghana’s Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese that has been under the leadership of Archbishop John Bonaventure Kwofie, the Local Ordinary of Accra.

The appointment was made public, Tuesday, August 18 by the Chargé d'affaires at the Apostolic Nunciature in Ghana, Msgr. Paval Talapka.

“I wish to inform you that with a Decree dated 31st July 2020, on the Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, having the special faculty from the Holy Father Pope Francis has nominated Rev. Fr. John Baptist Attakruh… as the new Apostolic Administrator Sede Vacante et ad nutum Sanctae Sedis of the vacant Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese with all the rights and faculties of a Local Ordinary,” Msgr. Paval Talapka said.

Until his appointment, Fr. John Baptist has been serving as the Director of the Diocesan Catechetical Institute of Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese.

Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese has been vacant since January 2019 following the transfer and elevation of the then Local Ordinary, Archbishop Kwofie to the Archdiocese of Accra.

“The new Apostolic Administrator has been appointed after taking into consideration the difficulty for Archbishop John B. Kwofie, until now the Apostolic Administrator of Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese, to continue to administer the Diocese due to his health condition and also the distance from Accra,” Msgr. Paval said in the August 18 statement obtained by ACI Africa.

He thanked Archbishop Kwofie, “for the great service he has rendered to this Diocese until now” and expressed his “best wishes and the assurance of prayers for his earliest recovery.”

Born in October 1957, the new Apostolic Administrator was ordained a Priest of the Diocese of Sekondi-Takoradi on July 30, 1989. 

He holds a Licentiate in Sacred Liturgy from the Rome-based Pontifical Institute of St. Anselm and a Master of Science in Educational Administration and Supervision of Instruction.

Fr. John Baptist also served as a formator and lecturer at St. Peter’s Regional Seminary in Ghana’s Cape Coast Archdiocese.

“It is my prayer that God blesses Fr. John Baptist Attakruh with the grace he needs as he assumes this service and responsibility entrusted to him in the Diocese,” said the Chargé d'Affaires who also invited all the Clergy, the Religious and the Lay faithful to “welcome and give him the necessary support.” 

With a population of about 438,700 Catholics according to 2017 statistics, Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese was established in November 1969. It is part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Cape Coast.
