Members of the Association of Episcopal Conferences of Central Africa (ACEAC), comprising Catholic Bishops in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Rwanda, have dedicated the First Sunday of Advent to prayers for peace in the world and especially the Great Lakes region.

In a statement titled, “Day of Prayer for Peace in the World and in the Great Lakes Region” issued on November 23, ACEAC members say, “The Advent season is a time of waiting and of commemorating the coming of the Son of God to the world of men. It takes on particular significance in this year 2025, as we celebrate the Jubilee of the Incarnation of the Wonderful Counselor … and Prince of Peace.”

“The peace of Christ goes beyond what the world offers. It is a comprehensive peace that touches all dimensions of the human person. In this sense, we acknowledge all collective and individual efforts toward the return of peace in our sub-region,” the Catholic Bishops say.

They add, “We are aware that our peace initiatives will always remain limited. Advent invites us to open ourselves to welcome the One who can quench our thirst for peace: Christ is our Peace.”

“The Bishops who are members of ACEAC have helped us in this by dedicating the 1st Sunday of Advent to prayer and reflection on forgiveness, reconciliation, and peace in our sub-region,’” the Catholic Bishops say.

They note that the first Sunday of Advent was chosen because of its proximity to the anniversary of the founding of ACEAC on 3 December 1984.

ACEAC members invite the people of God on the First Day of Advent to pray for the strengthening of living together in “a region in crisis”, as well as the care for vulnerable people, including women, children, migrants, and victims of armed conflicts.

“May the Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, intercede for peace in Africa and in the Great Lakes Region,” the Catholic Bishops say.
