The Coordinator of the Oblates’ Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) ministry in Kenya has appealed for ecological education for young people, saying it is essential if the Church is to partner with the next generation in protecting the environment.
Fr. Iyo Iyan Daquin said made the appeal on Tuesday, December 9, during a panel at a breakfast side event of the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) at the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in Nairobi.
Fr. Daquin argued that teaching young people the language and concepts of environmental protection is a practical way to build long-term ecological stewardship.
“Education is grounded in ecological literacy, which is very important. Young people, especially the younger ones, need to be allowed to become familiar with the language of environmental protection,” Fr. Daquin said.
The Parish Priest of St. Eugene de Mazenod Parish of Kenya’s Catholic Diocese of Meru shared his Parish’s year-round commitment to environmental education, noting a series of dedicated initiatives aimed at fostering ecological awareness across all age groups.
