Archbishop Gabriel Mbilingi of Angola’s Lubango Catholic Archdiocese has emphasized that total dedication to God must guide the life of every Priest and Bishop, saying vocation requires love, service, and faithful witness.

In his homily during a Thanksgiving Mass for his 25th Episcopal Anniversary on Tuesday, January 6, Archbishop Mbilingi emphasized that being a Priest or Bishop goes beyond celebrating the sacraments.

“The Priestly and Episcopal vocation is a calling that demands constant dedication, love, and faithfulness,” the Angolan Catholic Archbishop said during the Eucharistic celebration that was held at St. Joseph Cathedral of Lubango Archdiocese.

According to him, being a Priest or Bishop is not limited to celebrating the sacraments, but involves living God’s love daily, serving others, and witnessing the faith in every gesture and action.

“To love one’s neighbor and to manifest faith through concrete works is the strongest sign that we are fulfilling the vocation God has entrusted to us,” the Angolan member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritans/Holy Ghost Fathers/CSSp.) said.

Archbishop Mbilingi also emphasized that “service to the Church requires facing the challenges of the contemporary world,” reminding the people of God of the need to “care not only spiritually, but also materially, for those who suffer and are in need.”

According to the Angolan Catholic Church leader, vocation is inseparable from love and solidarity.

Archbishop Mbilingi explained that only those who truly know God can love fully, recognize the needs of others, and act to alleviate their suffering.

“We cannot ignore the hunger, poverty, or pain of those around us. It is through the practice of charity that we show the strength of our faith,” he said.

He said that Christian life requires “coherence between words and actions,” reminding the people of God that faith is “concretely expressed in caring for others, sharing, and paying attention to the most vulnerable.”

The Local Ordinary of Lubango said, “Every act of love is a response to the vocation God entrusts to pastors and the faithful.”

“True faith is translated into deeds, and these deeds must always be directed toward the good of one’s neighbor and service to the Church,” he added.

Archbishop Mbilingi emphasized that every Christian, inspired by their vocation, must take responsibility for caring for others, helping those in need, promoting human dignity, and demonstrating faith through concrete acts of charity.

He noted that it is through the practice of solidarity that the Church fulfills its mission of being a visible sign of God’s love in the world.

“When lived fully, vocation inspires, transforms, and leaves a lasting legacy, showing that service to the Church is also a path of holiness and concrete love for others,” Archbishop Mbilingi said.
