New Sisters’ Congregation in South Sudanese Catholic Diocese Announces Focus on Sick, Elderly Clergy and Religious

The Religious Institute of the Little Sisters of St. Bakhita, which has formally begun its mission in South Sudan’s Catholic Diocese of Wau, has announced that its apostolate will focus on providing compassionate care to elderly and ailing members of the clergy, as well as women and men Religious.

According to a Wednesday, January 15, report, Sr. Gloria Zacharia, a founding member of the Diocesan Right Congregation, said their plans also include “establishing boarding schools for girls.”

Sr. Gloria, who spoke during the welcoming ceremony of her Congregation that was held at the Nazareth Sisters’ house in Wau, revealed that under the Care Ministry for the Clergy and Religious, they will be seeking to open and run a home for elderly and sick priests, as well as “other consecrated individuals who lack caretakers.”

Meanwhile, the Local Ordinary of the Wau Diocese, Bishop Matthew Remijio Adam, has urged the people of God under his pastoral care to pray for the Little Sisters of St. Bhakita and Sr. Gloria, who will initially be hosted by the Nazareth Sisters.

Bishop Remijio lauded the Nazareth Sisters for “embracing the new congregation without hesitation” and went on to describe Sr. Gloria’s presence as marking “the beginning of their congregation’s activities” in the South Sudan Diocese.

The South Sudanese member of the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus (MCCJ) is quoted in the January 15 Voice of Hope Radio as clarifying that “the new congregation’s presence at the Nazareth Sisters’ house is not meant to replace them, but to complement their work by recruiting young girls to assist in their mission.”

On their part, the Nazareth Sisters thanked the Bishop “for welcoming the new local Diocesan association” of women Religious into the Diocese.

Speaking on their behalf at the welcoming ceremony of the congregation, Sr. Lucia thanked the Bishop for supporting and formally receiving the congregation, describing the move as necessary for strengthening pastoral and social services in the Diocese.

While acknowledging that the Nazareth Sisters have limited resources, the member of the Nazareth Sisters said the community was pleased to host Sister Gloria and members of her congregation at their house.

She welcomed the Little Sisters of St. Bhakita, noting that the Diocese is in great need of young people to support various apostolic works and that the presence of the new congregation will help boost the Church’s outreach.
