Christian Leaders in Nigeria Hail Appointment of Compatriot to World Trade Organization

The new Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr.Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

Christian leaders in Nigeria have hailed the appointment of their compatriot, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as the new Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

In their Tuesday, February 16 statement, members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) “urge” the 66-year-old economist and international development expert to serve with the “impeccability of Daniel.”

On Monday, February 15, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala made history as the first woman and first African to be appointed to head the Geneva, Switzerland-based body whose main aim is to ensure that global trade flows smoothly, predictably and freely as possible.

“Our dear Sister, we urge you to lead the WTO with impeccability like Daniel did (Daniel 6) in Babylon so that the footprint of WTO might be positively felt in all countries of the world as it was never felt before,” the Christian leaders in Nigeria say in their statement obtained by ACI Africa.

They describe Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s appointment to WTO as “a giant stride for all women all over the world, being the first time, a woman is so appointed.”

“It is much more a giant stride and rare achievement for African women in particular,” the Christian leaders say in their collective statement signed by CAN President, Rev. Samson Ayokunle.

“Your appointment is a pride to the black race all over the world and a greater pride to Nigeria, your home country, which you had served so well before with utmost integrity,” they say referencing Dr. Okonjo-Iweala and add, “Your appointment has demonstrated that with God all things are possible.”

For CAN members who include a representative from the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), “the initial snare” of their compatriot’s appointment to the international position “was broken by Him who rules in the affairs of men.”

“Power and promotion belong to God. Yours is a lesson for us all to be our best and that at the fullness of time, no opposition can stand our elevation,” they note in their February 16 statement.

The faith leaders further say, “God has blessed our country with great human resources any country can be proud of and we are happy that some of them are now playing global roles to the glory of God.”

“With your antecedents, professionalism, commitment, focus, determination and dedication to duty, with God on your side, we have no doubt that you will succeed in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen,” CAN members say.

Set to assume office on March 1, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala is expected to lead WTO for a four-year-renewable term that is to first expire on 31 August 2025.
