Pope Francis Appoints Native of Ivory Coast Apostolic Nuncio to Mali

Pope Francis has appointed Msgr. Mambé Jean-Sylvain Emien, a native of Ivory Coast, as his representative in Mali and assigned him the Titular See of Potenza Picena in Italy with the dignity of Archbishop.

The appointment of Msgr. Emien was published by the Holy See Press Office Wednesday, February 2.

The Ivorian Archbishop-elect has been serving as the Councilor of the Apostolic Nunciature in the West African nation of Mali.

Born in Ivory Coast in September 1970, Msgr. Emien was ordained a Priest for the West African nation’s Catholic Diocese of Yopougon in December 1997.

He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on 1 July 2005, and has, over the years, served in Apostolic Nunciatures in Angola, Nigeria, Guinea, Mali, New Zealand, Spain and the Czech Republic.

The holder of a degree in Canon Law is fluent in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian languages. 

Diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the Republic of Mali were established on 29 October 1979.

Archbishop Tymon Tytus Chmielecki, a native of Poland, has been serving as the Holy Father’s representative in Mali since May 2019. He has also been serving as the Apostolic Nuncio in Guinea.

Meanwhile, the Holy Father has transferred Archbishop Marek Solczyński who has been serving as his representative in Tanzania to Turkey. 

The Titular Archbishop of Caesarea in ​​Mauretania had served as the Nuncio in the East African nation since April 2019.
