London-based University Seeks to Enhance Research in Catholic Education in Africa

University of St. Mary’s, Twickenham

The London-based University of St. Mary’s, Twickenham, is seeking collaboration with young scholars in Africa in a bid to enhance research that focuses on Catholic education on the African continent.

This initiative is being realized through a post-doctoral research programme whose goal “is the improvement of home-grown research capabilities in Africa in the under-explored area of Catholic education.”

In a widely-circulated letter explaining the initiative, the project manager, Dr. Christine Edwards-Leis has described the initiative as “a skills development programme delivered at St Mary’s University, London, and targeted at early career researchers from African universities.”

“As a complementary goal, we wish to foster long-lasting, mutually enhancing relationships between St. Mary’s and Catholic higher education institutions in Africa,” Dr. Edwards-Leis has explained in her letter and mentioned Porticus Africa as a partner in this research initiative.

Nairobi-based Tangaza University College (TUC) is among the African institutions of higher learning whose collaboration is being sought.

“We just received the invitation and I have shared it with the Tangaza family, the Principal of TUC, Bro. Tom Kearney told ACI Africa Wednesday and added, “I am not sure yet about the level of participation at Tangaza since this is the first time Tangaza is receiving this invitation.”

However, Bro. Kearney continued, “this invitation is an acknowledgement that as Tangaza University College, we are involved in research, we are involved in Catholic education, and that we can be part of this collaboration,”

According to Dr. Dr. Edwards-Leis, the London-based university’s collaboration with institutions of higher learning in Africa “will be formalized by the creation of a unique, global research group whose purpose is to work collaboratively to nurture postdoctoral research with the aim of improving the provision of Catholic education  in Africa.”

The research is intended to be in three stages, namely, working with local African mentors in identifying and framing research focus; traveling to St Mary’s University in London where scholars will participate in a research development programme; and returning home to complete the project and submitting research for publication and conference presentation.
