Pope Francis Accepts Retirement of Burundi’s Gitega Archbishop, Appoints Successor

Pope Francis has accepted the retirement of Archbishop Simon Ntamwana of the Catholic Archdiocese of Gitega in Burundi and appointed his successor.

In the latest administrative changes published Saturday, February 19 by the Holy See Press Office, the Holy Father appointed Bishop Bonaventure Nahimana of Rutana Diocese as the successor of Archbishop Ntamwana.

Archbishop-elect Nahimana is expected to succeed 75-year-old Archbishop Ntamwana who has been at the helm of the Burundian Archdiocese since August 1986. 

The Archbishop-elect will also serve as Apostolic Administrator of Rutana Diocese where he has been Bishop since his Episcopal Ordination in March 2009.

A native of the same Episcopal See, the 62-year-old Archbishop-elect was ordained a Priest in August 1986.

After his ordination, the holder of a Bachelor's Degree in Theology served in various capacities including, Dean of Studies at the Minor Seminary of the Diocese of Mugera where he also taught, Diocesan Vocations Director, Parish Priest, and Diocesan Director of Catholic Education, among other responsibilities..

He also served as Rector of the Diocesan Major Seminary of Mugera.

Archbishop-elect Nahimana also pursued studies at the Institut en Sciences Pédagogiques et Religieuses in Abidjan, in Ivory Coast, earning a Licentiate in Educational Studies in 2002.

He served as Spiritual Director at the Inter-diocesan Major Seminary of Burasira and Rector of the Inter-diocesan Major Seminary of Burasira and Secretary of the Bishops' Commission for Vocations and Seminaries.

Once installed as Archbishop, the Burundian Catholic Church leader is expected to oversee Gitega Archdiocese, which measures 3,879 km² with an estimated population of 1,617,490 Catholics, representing 81.7 percent of the population, according to 2019 statistics.
