Members of the Association of Catholic Journalists in Southern Malawi and an association of Lay faithful have donated a disaster relief package to flood victims in the Southeastern African nation.

A Monday, April 4 report indicates that the package, which includes food and non-food items, was handed over to the Catholic Development Commission of Malawi’s Chikwawa Diocese for distribution to flood survivors in Chikwawa and Nsanje districts.

“Being journalists, we are aware of the situation in evacuation camps and even the homes of the affected populations. That’s why we have mobilized funds to purchase these relief items,” the chair of social welfare of the Catholic Journalists association, Simeon Shumba, has been quoted as saying during the April 2 event.

Mr. Shumba adds, “We strongly believe we have a social obligation that goes beyond news reporting. In times of disaster like ours, we have to do something to at least help the afflicted.”

The donation comes as thousands of disaster-displaced households are still homeless and food insecure, the report indicates.

Meanwhile members of a Catholic social grouping called ‘Í am catholic and I am Proud’ also reached out to flood victims, donating soap, buckets, and soya pieces among other items.

“We are a social group that started as a WhatsApp platform. We have a membership of Catholics in Malawi and those in diaspora,” the Vice Secretary of the group, Nyakanyaka, has been quoted as saying.

He adds, “We were equally concerned by the magnitude of the disaster and hence decided to do something”

“Ours is the belief that the very small things we can donate can change lives, especially here where people desperately need food, shelter, and even clothes,” Mr. Nyakanyaka says.

Receiving both donations during the April 2 event, the Director of Social Services for Chikwawa Diocese expressed his appreciation to both groups for their kind gesture.

“Since our Bishop sent out an appeal for help, there has been an overwhelming response. We are very thankful,” Fr. Mathews Semba has been quoted as saying.

Fr. Semba adds, “Every time we receive donations we are making sure that they reach the intended beneficiary while also ensuring equitable distribution.”
