Pope Francis Accepts Retirement of Bishop of Inhambane in Mozambique, Appoints Successor

Pope Francis has accepted the retirement of Bishop Adriano Langa of Inhambane Diocese in Mozambique and appointed his successor.

In the latest administrative changes published Monday, April 4 by the Holy See Press Office, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Ernesto Maguengue, the Auxiliary Bishop of  Nampula Archdiocese, as Bishop Langa’s successor.

The 57-year-old Mozambican Bishop was ordained a Priest for the Archdiocese of Maputo in May 1989.

In June 2004, he was appointed Bishop of Pemba and ordained a Bishop for the Mozambican Diocese in October 2004. 

He resigned in October 2012, and appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Nampula Archdiocese in August 2014.

For a year, Bishop Maguengue also served as Apostolic Administrator for Nampula Archdiocese following his appointment in July 2016.

Prior to his Episcopal Ordination in October 2004, he had served as Parish Administrator, head of the Secretariat for pastoral care of the Archdiocese of Maputo, and lecturer at the Major Seminary for Philosophy. 

The holder of a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome had also served in the administration of Pius X Inter-Diocesan Major Seminary for Theology.

Once installed as the Local Ordinary of Inhambane, Bishop Maguengue is expected to oversee the 68,476 square kilometer Diocese that was erected in August 1962.

The Diocese that is part of the Archdiocese of Maputo has a population of 333,435 Catholics, according to 2019 statistics.
