Apostolic Administrator of DR Congo’s Matadi Diocese Appointed Diocesan Bishop

Pope Francis has appointed Mons. André Giraud Pindi Muanza the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Matadi in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC). The Bishop-elect has been serving as the Apostolic Administrator of the Congolese Diocese since March 2021.

The Episcopal appointment of the Congolese Cleric was made public by the Holy See Press Office Saturday, April 23 and announced by the leadership of the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO).

“His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed Monsignor André Giraud Pindi Muanza as the New Bishop of the Diocese of Matadi,” the President of CENCO, Archbishop Marcel Utembi Tapa, says in a statement issued April 23.

Archbishop Utembi adds, “The newly appointed Bishop was until now Apostolic Administrator Sede vacante et ad nutum Sanctae Sedis of the same Diocese.”

“The General Secretariat of CENCO is delighted with this news; it presents its warm and sincere congratulations to His Excellency Mons. André Giraud Pindi Muanza and wishes him a fruitful and successful Episcopal Ministry in the Church-Family of God which is in Matadi,” CENCO leadership further says.

The Bishop-elect is expected to take over from Bishop Daniel Nlandu Mayi who died in December 2021.

Born in July 1964, Mons. Muanza was ordained a Priest for the Diocese of Matadi on 18 September 1994.

He holds a Licentiate in Canon Law from the Catholic University of Congo in Kinshasa, DRC. He also holds a doctorate both civil and church law (Utroque iure) from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome.

Before he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Matadi, Mons. Muanza had served in various positions, including Curate of the Notre Dame de la Sagesse Parish in Kinshasa; lecturer of Canon Law at the Inter-Diocesan Major Seminary in Mayidi, and Parish Priest at the Notre Dame de Compassion Pastoral Unit.

He also served as Vicar General of Matadi Diocese from 2019 until March 2021 when he was appointed the Apostolic Administrator of the same Episcopal See.

Once ordained Bishop, Mons. Muanza is expected to shepherd the people of God in the 31,000 square kilometer Congolese Diocese with an estimated population of 1,276,854 Catholics, according to 2019 statistics.
