Parish Priest of St. François-Xavier Parish of Atakpamé Diocese in Togo Appointed Bishop

Pope Francis has appointed Mons. Moïse Touho as the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Atakpamé in Togo.

The appointment of Mons. Touho who has been serving as Parish Priest of St. François-Xavier Parish of Atakpamé Diocese was made public on Wednesday, October 26 by the Holy See Press office.

The Togolese Catholic Diocese has been vacant since November 2019 when Bishop Nicodème Anani Barrigah-Benissan who had been at the helm of the Diocese since his Episcopal Ordination in March 2008 was transferred to the Archdiocese of Lomé.

Born in December 1963 in the same Diocese, the Bishop-elect was ordained a Priest in June 1992 after he had completed his Priestly studies at St. Gall’s Major Seminary in Ouidah, Benin, and the Seminary of Cremona, Italy. 

Mons. Touho holds a licentiate in Spiritual Theology from the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome.

Since he was ordained a Priest, the member of the Clergy of Atakpamé Diocese served in various positions, including Parish Vicar in Blitta (1993-1994); Parish Priest in Kpékplémé (1994-1995); and special Secretary to the Apostolic Administrator of Atakpamé (1995-1998).

He also served as head of the Spirituality Center in Agbandi (2000-2002); administrator (2002-2006) and Parish Priest of Saint Augustin in Agadji (2006-2017).

Since 2017, the Bishop-elect has been serving as Parish Priest of St. François-Xavier in Badou, and member of the Presbyteral Council. 

Once ordained Bishop, Mons. Touho is expected to oversee Atakpamé Diocese that has a population of 343,541 Catholics, according to 2020 statistics

The 13,900 square-kilometer Catholic Diocese that was erected in September 1964 is part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lomé.
