Pope Francis Appoints Two Auxiliary Bishops for Ghana’s Accra Archdiocese

Pope Francis has, on Tuesday, February 14, appointed two Auxiliary Bishops for Ghana’s Accra Archdiocese

The appointment of Mons. John Kobina Louis alongside Mons. Anthony Narh Asare was published by the Holy See Press Office and made public in the West African nation by the Apostolic Nuncio at the Holy Spirit Cathedral of Accra Archdiocese.

At the time of his Episcopal appointment, Mons. Kobina has been serving as the Vicar General of the Ghanaian Archdiocese. 

Born in Accra in November 1964, Mons. Kobina was ordained a Priest for the Ghanaian Archdiocese in July 1992 after completing his studies in Theology at St. Peter’s Major Seminary Pedu in Cape Coast Archdiocese

The Ghanaian Bishop-elect holds licentiate degrees in Dogmatic Theology and Religious Studies and Sociology from the Rome-based Pontifical Urbaniana University and the Catholic University College of Ghana, respectively.

In his three decades of Priesthood, Msgr. Louis has served as a Parochial Vicar, Parish Administrator, Parish Priest, and the President of the National Union of Ghana Catholic Diocesan Priest's Associations (NUGCDPA), among others. 

Bishop-elect Kobina has been assigned the Titular See of Fesseë.

The Holy Father has also appointed 57-year-old Mons. Narh as Auxiliary Bishop of Accra Archdiocese.

Mons. Narh was ordained a Priest of the Accra Archdiocese in July 1995 after completing his philosophical and theological studies from St Paul’s Seminary in Sowutuom and St Paul’s Major Seminary in Pedu, respectively. 

The holder of a Master of Arts degree in management, a Master of Arts degree in leadership and pastoral care, and a Master of Arts degree in Supervisory Practice from All Hallow’s College in Dublin, Ireland has been serving at Parish Priest of Saints Anne and Joachim Teshie and head of priestly personnel in Accra Archdiocese.

As a Priest, the Bishop-elect who has been assigned the Titular See of Castellum in Numidia has also served as a Parish Vicar and Bursar of the Archdiocese of Accra, among others. 

Once ordained, the Bishops-elect will assist Archbishop John Bonaventure Kwofie in shepherding the people of God in the 3,255 square kilometers Metropolitan See that is headquartered in Ghana’s capital city, and with a population of 399,900 Catholics, according to the Catholic hierarchy.

Archbishop Kwofie has expressed his gratitude to Pope Francis following the double appointments.

“I wish to register gratitude to the Apostolic nuncio and the Holy Father for doing us this favor. I thought it was not possible but God’s time is the best,” the member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritans) has said.

“We would like to congratulate you and pray that God will continue to bless and give you the needed gifts to exercise your new offices and ministries in the Church,” they say in the statement signed by NUGCDPA President, Fr. Thaddeus Kuusah.

They add, “We pray that Ss. Cyril and Methodius, on whose Feast Day you were named Bishops, will intercede for you always.”
