Members of the Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC) have called on the people of God in the East African country to avoid situations that are likely to distract their focus on the Risen Christ.

In their Easter 2023 Message, UEC members dissuade the people of God from habits such as corruption, indifference, injustice, insubordination, immorality, selfishness, and violence, noting that such habits are “incompatible with the people who have risen with Christ and are led by the Spirit.”

“With Christ's death, we have died to sin and with his resurrection, we have risen to new life… Therefore, the spirit of anger, alienation, hatred, greed, intolerance, corruption, indifference, injustice, insubordination, immorality, selfishness, and violence are incompatible with the people who have risen with Christ and are led by the Spirit,” Catholic Bishops in Uganda say in their April 8 message signed by Bishop Joseph Anthony Zziwa, the UEC Chairman.

They add, “When one opts to live by the influence of the flesh alone, he or she remains in the tomb; then that person does not rise with Christ.”

“Beware of any ideology or behavior that distracts you from our focus on the Risen Christ,” the UEC members say in the message signed by the Bishop of Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese.

The Catholic Bishops laud the people of God in Uganda for experiencing spiritual growth during the Lenten Season and for continuing to live the impact of that transforming experience of Lent.

They reiterate the message of Pope Francis this year, which they say reflects on the Lenten period as “an opportunity in our spiritual transformation in light of the transfiguration of Jesus.”

“As Christians, we have strived to live the new life and repented for our shortfalls during lent, an opportunity of an encounter with God and love of our neighbor,” UEC members says, and add, “The experience is a continuous process of spiritual growth throughout the year. Consequently, it is imperative for us Christians to live according to the positive outcome of the Lenten period in our daily lives.”

The Catholic Church leaders urge the people of God to guard against “remaining in the tomb”, saying, “We exhort you to live according to the spirit of the risen Christ continuously to enable ourselves die to sin and rise to the newness of life.”

“Let us avoid remaining in the tomb,” they say, and add, “Jesus’ victory over death (sin) is the reason for us to rejoice and be glad during the Eastertide and always.”
