Pope Francis Accepts Resignation of Bururi Bishop in Burundi, Appoints Successor

Bishop-elect Fr. Salvator Niciteretse of Bururi diocese, Burundi

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop Vennat Bacinoni from the pastoral care of Bururi Diocese in Burundi and, at the same time, appointed his successor, Burundian Fr. Salvator Niciteretse.

The announcement was made public Saturday, February 15, at the Vatican and published by the Holy See Press Office.

Until his appointment, Fr. Niciteretse has been serving at Conference of Catholic Bishops of Burundi (CECAB) as the secretary of the Episcopal Commission for the Lay Apostolate.

A priest of Bururi Diocese, the 61-year-old Bishop-elect was ordained a priest in July 1989.

He holds a licentiate in Pastoral Theology and a doctorate in the Social Doctrine of the Church, both from the Rome-based Pontifical Lateran University.

Besides serving at the episcopal conference, the Bishop-elect has been teaching at the Major Seminary of Gitega and of Kiryama in Burundi, as well as serving at the International Forum of Catholic Action (IFCA) as the African representative.

He will succeed Bishop Bacinoni, who will turn 80 on February 20, having been the Local Ordinary of Bururi diocese since September 2007.

The diocese of Bururi was established on June 6, 1969 from the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Gitega. On January 17, 2009, the diocese lost territory to establish the diocese of Rutana.

According to 2015 statistics, the diocese measures 5,983 km² with an estimated population of 658,400 Catholics, representing 40 percent of the population.
