Mons. Norbert Tamba Sandouno, who was appointed on June 29 as the pioneer Bishop of the newly erected Diocese of Guéckédou in Guinea has expressed joy and appealed for prayers ahead of his Episcopal Ministry.

Addressing journalists during a July 1 press conference, the Bishop-elect said, “I am overwhelmed with joy at being chosen by God as the first bishop of Guéckédou.”

“Despite my weaknesses and limitations, I am filled with joy for this mission entrusted to me by the Holy Father,” Mons. Tamba said, and added, “My joy is even greater to see the Catholic Church in Guinea has a new face. Yesterday we had three dioceses, today we have four. The Lord has answered the prayers of all Catholics in Guinea.”

He thanked the Holy Father for “bestowing his trust and confidence in me to lead the flock in Guéckédou.”

Born in June 1967 in Koniandou, the Bishop-elect was ordained a Priest for Kankan Diocese in November 2007 after completing his theological and philosophical studies at Saint Augustine Major Seminary in Bamako, Mali.

In his July 1 address to journalists, Mons. Tamba highlighted some of the challenges ahead of his Episcopal Ministry in the Guinean Catholic Diocese.

“A new Diocese comes with many challenges including the proclamation of the Gospel, the development of the Diocese of Guéckédou at all levels, and ensuring the spiritual growth of our faithful,” he said.

The Guinean Bishop-elect appealed for collaboration in addressing the highlighted challenges, saying, “I expect a great deal from all the pastoral agents and lay people of Guéckédou.”

He called upon the people of God, who will be under his pastoral care “to work hand in hand to build their Diocese together.”

Guéckédou Diocese measures 35,476 square kilometers and has a population of 1,285,308 of which 62,509 are Catholics, representing 4.86 percent of the total population, according to the June 29 Holy See Press office report.
