Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), a UK-based human rights organization, has welcomed the Wednesday, July 19 Presidential pardon granted to a lawyer and a human rights activist in Egypt.

Patrick George Zaki, who is also a student at an Italian University was, on July 18, given a three-year sentence by the Emergency State Security Court in Al Mansoura Governorate after being charged with “spreading fake news inside and outside Egypt” in December 2021.

On the other hand, lawyer Mohammad Al Baqer was sentenced to four years imprisonment by the same Court after he was found guilty of “spreading fake news and undermining national security” in September 2021. He had been arrested while attending the interrogation of his client in September 2019.

“CSW welcomes the news that Mr. Zaki and Mr. Baqer have been pardoned,” CSW Founder President, Mervyn Thomas, says in a Thursday, July 20 report.

Mr. Thomas calls on Egyptian authorities “to act on President Sisi’s personal commitment to improve human rights and promote equal citizenship in Egypt.”

“We also continue to call for the immediate and unconditional release of all those detained on similarly excessive charges in relation to the exercise of their right to freedom of expression,” he says.

Mr. Zaki was arrested and questioned in July 2019 after publishing the article, “Displacement, killing and oppression: The outcomes of a week of the daily life of Egyptian Copts” in which he describes his life as a Christian in the northeastern African country.

He was detained in February 2020 and spent 22 months in detention before he was released on bail in December last year.

On Wednesday, July 19, CSW Founder President had described Mr. Zaki’s sentencing as “deeply disappointing” and called on Egypt’s President, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, to pardon him.

In the July 20 report, CSW Founder President also calls for “the immediate and unconditional release of all those detained on similarly excessive charges in relation to the exercise of their right to freedom of expression.”
