Scottish Catholic Entity Rallying for Funds to Feed Starving Communities in Ethiopia

Mr. Fikre said the official aid and development agency of the Catholic Church in Scotland is providing "the most effective assistance" by targeting the most vulnerable people in the most remote locations of the Oromia region. 

"We're prioritizing women, older people, and malnourished children," he said.

Fikre said one of the ways they are assisting the people of God is through a cash transfer program.

He said the cash transfer program is a "dignified way of assisting so that people choose what they need."

SCIAF has been fundraising to feed the people of God in the country, noting that the country in the horn of Africa is facing its worst drought in recent history.

"Rivers have dried up, crops have withered and died, livestock have perished.  Families are trapped in a deadly cycle of poverty," SCIAF says, adding that 20 million people "are on the brink of famine" while at least 4.5 million livestock have died.

"There are severe food and water shortages. The amount of available food has reduced dramatically. Adults, especially mothers, will choose to go without food so that their children can eat," the entity says.
