Second Catholic Archbishop of Bertoua Archdiocese in Cameroon Dies at 88

Archbishop Roger Pirenne, the second Catholic Archbishop of Bertoua Archdiocese in Cameroon, has passed on in Yaounde after an illness. He was aged 88.

Archbishop Pirenne died in the early hours of Sunday, August 6 at the Caisse clinic, in Yaoundé, the Cameroonian capital, the Local Ordinary of the Cameroonian Archdiocese, Archbishop Joseph Atanga, announced in a statement.

The Archbishop invited the “entire Christian community to pray for the eternal salvation of Mons. Roger Pirenne, while awaiting the funeral programme which will be communicated at a later date.”

Born August 9, 1934 in Clermont-sur-Berwinne, France where late Archbishop Pirienne was ordained a Priest in August 1958. 

The late member of the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CICM) retired in December 2009 at the age of 75.

On social media, Archbishop Pirenne is being eulogized as a devoted servant of God.

“The Catholic family remembers the life and legacy of Archbishop Emeritus Roger Pirenne, a devoted servant of God and the Catholic Church, who worked in Cameroon for many years before his death today in Yaounde,” Mimi Mefo says in a Facebook post.

On his part, politician Vincent Sosthène Fouda says, “Good and faithful servant; enter into the joy of your master. I knew him as a teacher, as a Bishop and as a faithful friend.”

“Thank you for your faithful friendship, thank you for your loyalty.  Thank you professor, thank you Roger, thank you Monsignor,” he adds.

Parishioners of Holy Family Cathedral of Bertoua Archdiocese have also said, in an August 6 statement, “During his time as Archbishop of Bertoua, Mons. Roger Pirenne left an indelible mark. He worked tirelessly to strengthen the faith of the faithful and encourage unity within the community. His exemplary leadership and wisdom were a source of inspiration for many believers.”

The death of Archbishop Roger Pirenne, they add, “is a great loss for the Roman Catholic Church in Cameroon. His memory will remain engraved in the hearts of all those touched by his kindness and commitment. His legacy will live on through the achievements he made and the values he embodied.”

“At this time of mourning, the Roman Catholic community of Cameroon comes together to pay tribute to this exceptional man who dedicated his life to God and to the service of others. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family, his close friends and all those who were touched by his teaching and his example,” Parishioners of Holy Family Cathedral of Bertoua Archdiocese further say.

They add, “Archbishop Roger Pirenne will remain a model of faith and devotion for future generations. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide those of the Catholic faith in Cameroon. May his soul rest in peace beside his Creator, and may his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to all.”
