Bishop Edward Hiiboro Kussala of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura Yambio has said the annual anniversary in memory of his predecessor, Joseph Abangite Gasi, will be an opportunity to seek peace and love in South Sudan.

Bishop Gasi who passed on 12 September 2014 had been at the helm of South Sudanese Diocese since his Episcopal Ordination in April 1975. He retired in April 2008 at the age of 80.

This year, the late Bishop’s annual death anniversary celebrations dubbed ‘Bishop Gasi Day’ will be marked from September 13.

In a Monday, August 7 statement, Bishop Hiiboro remembered his predecessor as “a true ambassador of peace”, and a safeguard of admired moral life that he said is worth recalling.

“Let us gather during these festivities and ask for peace and love for our nation and our Diocese as well as the world,” said the 59-year-old Bishop who has been at the helm of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura Yambio since his Episcopal ordination on June 29, 2008.

He added, “Where there is love, there is peace. Let us go to the root and ask for the grace to live an authentic love that will always be accompanied by the fruits of true peace.”

“We know that among the principles dearest to Bishop Gasi was that of charity, love of God, love of neighbor, love of the fatherland and motherland,” Bishop Hiiboro said.

In his statement, Bishop Hiiboro recalled the prayer said by the late Bishop Gasi to his faithful when there were tribal clashes in the Catholic Diocese of Tombura Yambio, saying, “Have a tender and pure charity for your enemies; pray in particular for those who may have been the cause of what you are suffering for.”

The Church leader called on Christians of his Episcopal See to be encouraged by the words of the late Bishop Emeritus and ask the Lord to bless them with peace so that peace may be spread to all, especially to their families, Diocese, state, South Sudan and the whole world.

He added, “In the footsteps of our holy Pioneer Titarani Bishop Gasi Abangite, let us ask for the grace to live in attentiveness and dependence on the Holy Spirit, love of God, and love of others, so that, whatever the places and circumstances of our lives, we may be peacemakers.”
