At least 13 Eritrean Christians who have been in an Eritrean prison for 10 years have been released, a development that  Voice of the Martyrs Christian ministry describes as answered prayers.

In a message that ACI Africa obtained Friday, August 11, Mr. Todd Nettleton, the host of the Voice of Martyrs (VOM) radio believes that the 13 were released following a prayer campaign the station sent through email last month.

“Our prayers are being answered! Thirteen Eritrean Christians who have been imprisoned for the past 10 years are free today! We celebrate and praise the Lord for their release!” Mr. Nettleton says.

Mr. Nettleton explains that on July 22, he sent out an email asking for prayers for the release of two Christian pastors who were spending their 7,000th day in prison. Enclosed, was also an appeal for the release of hundreds of prisoners being held by the Eritrean government for simply being Christians.

He says that more than 10,000 people added their names to the list of those praying for Pastors Haile Nayzgi and Kiflu Gebremeskel as well as other imprisoned Christians in Eritrea just days after that email went out.

The host of the U.S based VOM radio says that the Christian entity’s website was also enriched with information “about sending an email or fax to the Eritrean Embassy on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Eritrea.”

“Just six days after sending that email, we received word from Christian contacts in Eritrea that 13 Christian prisoners had been set free! These six men and seven women had been in prison for 10 years!” the host of the station says.

He adds, “I’m saddened that Pastors Nayzgi and Gebremeskel were not among those released. We continue to pray that they will be freed from their prison cells soon.”

“We continue to pray for and call for the release of the 350+ other Christians imprisoned in Eritrea — our family members for all eternity,” he says.

The Eritrean government has allowed the Catholic Church to operate alongside the Eritrean Orthodox, Evangelical Lutheran, and Sunni Islam but regards other religious groups in the country as foreign entities.
