Plans are underway for the official launch of the National Jubilee Year of Catholic Youth in Cape Verde.

In an interview with Rádio Nova de Maria - Cape Verde that was reported Wednesday, November 22, an official of the Youth Secretariat of Cape Verde’s Catholic Diocese of Santiago in Cape Verde spoke about the August 4 -12, 2024 youth event that is to bring together thousands of youth from across the archipelago and island nation in the central Atlantic Ocean.

“On November 26, we're going to officially open this Jubilee, which will take place in 2024 and also launch the Jubilee Project,” Deacon Daniel Vaz who assists at the Diocesan Youth Secretariat said.

The Permanent Deacon highlighted some of the planned activities during the launch that coincides with the Solemnity of Christ the King, the conclusion of the Liturgical year.

“We're going to walk with the young people to a gallery in the community of St. John the Baptist Parish, where this year's Day of the Saint of Youth will be observed,” Deacon Vaz said.

He continued about the November 26 event, “We're going to have a moment with the Coordinator of the Jubilee Project, and we're going to have some speakers, namely the Bishop and the Government (representative) and also the assistant from the Youth Ministry, and then we're going to continue with the Eucharist, then the presentation of the project.”

The Eucharistic celebration is to be followed by social moments, as well as “cultural activities in the afternoon which will end around 4.30 p.m. or 5 p.m,” the youth official in the Catholic Diocese of Santiago in Cape Verde added.

Turning his attention to the August 2024 event, the Permanent Deacon said, “We expect to have a huge number of young people at the Jubilee next year. We're hoping that around 20,000 young people will be here in Praia for this great Jubilee of Cape Verdean Youth.”

“It's worth pointing out that it's a National Youth Jubilee, not a Diocesan Youth Jubilee; so it encompasses all sections of the country, from the two Dioceses to the Cape Verdean diaspora, and it's for everyone, Catholics, non-Catholics,” Deacon Vaz said about the event to be celebrated under the theme, “Joyful in hope” that was inspired by recommendations from Pope Francis 2023 World Youth Day in Lisbon, Portugal.

“The Holy Father this year defined what he himself asked of young people. He asked us to live joy and hope, to have the hope that the Church is waiting for you, the Church is waiting for you,” Deacon Vaz said.
