The Diocesan Pastoral Coordinator of the Catholic Diocese of Bafatá in Guinea-Bissau has expressed concern about the growing use of hate-filled rhetoric on the campaign trail, ahead of the country's general elections scheduled for November 23.

In a statement issued November 2, Fr. Augusto Mutna Tamba describes the current political atmosphere as marked by “pain and concern,” urging both citizens and politicians to maintain serenity, respect, and responsibility ahead of the presidential and legislative elections.

Fr. Tamba observes “with sadness the growth of speeches loaded with hatred and resentment,” stressing that such divisive rhetoric undermines fraternity and peaceful coexistence among Bissau-Guineans.

“The pain we feel when we see brothers divided by political interests must be transformed into a commitment to reconciliation. Peace is the fertile soil where democracy grows,” the Pastoral Coordinator of Bafatá Diocese says in his message issued after the November 1 launch of campaigns for the general elections.

Fr. Tamba notes that democracy must reflect the sovereign will of the people and ensure the free participation of all political forces, as long as they respect the rule of law.

Presenting proposals for a peaceful electoral environment, the Catholic Priest urges candidates to focus on constructive ideas rather than provocations.

“Voting is a right, but respecting the vote of others is a duty. Democracy is more than votes. It is also values,” he says.

The Catholic official appeals to politicians to reject discriminatory attitudes, hate speech, and incitement to violence, insisting that opponents should never be treated as enemies.

Fr. Tamba also encourages citizens to embrace unity and commit to the common good, noting that “Guinea-Bissau deserves a future built on dialogue, inclusion, and respect.”

He urges the electoral institutions to guarantee transparency, impartiality, and justice throughout the process.

Fr. Tamba also addresses the role of journalists and digital platforms, warning that information spaces must not become tools for manipulation.

“The media and social networks must inform and not inflame,” he says.

The Catholic Priest further expresses concern about rising political, ethnic, and religious conflicts across Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly during election cycles.

He warns that hate-driven narratives have devastated communities in several African nations and urges Bissau-Guineans not to repeat the same mistakes.

Fr. Tamba urges citizens to work toward a peaceful and dignified society, saying, “Let us build a land that dignifies our people, where we can live in peace.”

He notes that hope “must triumph over fear, fraternity over division, and dialogue over resentment.”
